The spiritual life requires tending. Weeding out self-limiting beliefs and non-useful behaviors, setting good boundaries around people or circumstances that deplete our energy or distract us from our primary purpose, making sure we include the life-giving waters of spiritual study and daily exposure to the light of the soul in superconscious meditation are all necessary practices to harvest a healthy, harmonious, happy life.

One of the errors we commonly make is to see through the filter of our memory and superimpose the past on the present. Removing that conceptual overlay is one of the goals of yoga practice. To be spiritually awake is to see things as they are, not as we are.
