A common error is to see through the filter of our memory and superimpose the past on the present. Removing that conceptual overlay is one of the goals of yoga practice. To be spiritually awake is to see things as they are, not as we are.

The shift in perspective that occurs when we realize what we are looking for is already within us makes all the difference. Understanding the purpose of meditation and spiritual practices supports our motivation to do it regularly. We still work at it, but without egoic striving to be good, better, or more spiritual.
