The spiritual teacher is one who leads us across the river of delusion to discover the shore of eternity -- taking us from identification with the body-mind as separate self to the reality of our spiritual nature and our oneness with God.

The valid knowledge of direct perception that exists in the mind of the enlightened teacher is imparted to the receptive listener. Because it is valid knowledge, it will resonate with the student's own intuitive wisdom. The discerning spiritual seeker can perceive, when listening to spiritual teachings, that which is spoken with the authority of revealed knowledge.

Beyond sensory input and the modifications of the mental field is what the mystics describe as "the still small voice." This is the "voice" of revealed knowledge, truth perceived directly through the faculty of intuition. Still the thought waves in the mind through meditation and allow the light of the soul to shine forth as inspiration.

Jesus described the nature of revealed Truth when he said: You may look here or there, but the kingdom [the direct experience of Truth, or Supreme Consciousness] will not come through observation. The kingdom is within you. Supreme Consciousness, the highest realization, is the truth of who you are; it is within [inherent to] your own nature.

In the experience of true meditation, the mind yields from the fluctuation of intellectual activity to rest in its spiritual base -- the pure, still, light of the Self. This resting in pure awareness harmonizes the physical, mental and emotional aspects of our being with the true Self. We are then naturally led to clear understanding and right action.

As we open ourselves to truth, as we cultivate the willingness to sit in the silence and wait upon the direct perception of the Self, we are lifted from identification with mind and body. We soar in the freedom of the Spirit and possibility opens up before us.
