It is not only the worldly ego--the aspect of self that has no interest in spiritual matters--that is the enemy of the soul but the pseudo-spiritualized ego, the ego that pretends to do spiritual work but on its own time frame, according to its own idea and agenda, and without surrender.

In our work for God we step into the stream of grace. With attachment to the results of our actions we step out of it, removing ourselves form the flow of guidance and inspiration continually available to the surrendered heart.

To pray wholeheartedly one must pray without attachment to outcome. Be completely willing to follow divine will. Refrain from wandering into forgetfulness and attachment to outcomes.

The sense of "overwhelm" is more related to desire than it is to action. The same body can fight very hard, kicking feet, thrashing arms and hands to stay afloat in water or, relax and stay afloat effortlessly.

Impatience, frustration, and irritability are all shades of anger related to thwarted desire. If we practice imperturbability, we short-circuit the karmic trap and free ourselves from present pain and future unhappiness.

To be surrendered to God means living in the moment, open to what life brings. This does not mean we float along in our boat of life without steering toward a destination, being tossed here and there with every wave of change. Our course is charted to God-realization, our rudder is service.
