Dispassion, the freedom from attraction and aversion, rests on the willingness to abide in the wholeness of the Self. Only when the mind is purified of desire can we be open to divine guidance.

The first step toward spiritual freedom is learning to control desires by redirecting our attention to what is useful. Ultimately, we are able to rest in the wholeness of God and all desire fades away. Without a separate self, desire cannot exist.

Thoughts and perceptions either lead toward freedom that liberates us from suffering or to the bondage that brings pain. The initial impression may belie its end result. Self-discipline may be painful in the beginning, but bring happiness and freedom in the end.
