Some spiritual students come in the guise of seeking truth but really want comfort. Truth does not bring comfort; it brings us the freedom from needing it.

The wisdom of spiritual teachings diagnoses the disease of ignorance that causes suffering. Regular sadhana or right spiritual practice is the medicine that supports the cure. Like any medicine, it works only if one makes use of it, and follows the prescription for its proper application.

Discernment beyond initial impressions is necessary to determine whether our thoughts and actions will lead to happiness or sorrow. Lust and greed are pleasurable in the beginning but end in pain. Compassion and kindness may be painful in the beginning but end in happiness.
