The first step toward spiritual freedom is learning to control desires by redirecting our attention to what is useful. Ultimately, we are able to rest in the wholeness of God and all desire fades away. Without a separate self, desire cannot exist.

Thoughts and perceptions either lead toward freedom that liberates us from suffering or the bondage that brings pain. The initial impression may belie its end result. Self-discipline may be painful in the beginning, but bring happiness and freedom in the end.
