Consciousness is our life. When consciousness abides primarily in the senses, our life energy is dissipated in sensory stimulation, the stirring of mental activity, and the pursuit of desires. When consciousness abides in the soul and sensory input is regulated by the will, our life energy grows stronger each day.

Identifying with thoughts and experiences is the habit of ego which then creates attractions and aversions to maintain its identity. Notice the tendency to superimpose “I, me, mine” on life. Let it go and take a step toward freedom.

Happiness and sorrow are both reflections of internal states. Nothing outside of us can cause these. If things, people, or situations could cause happiness or sorrow, then everyone would perceive it the same way, but what brings happiness to one person may bring sorrow to another.
