Lust, greed, and anger are first cousins. When our hearts are occupied by the self-interest of lust and greed, their cousin anger comes to join them. Our self-interest invariably runs into the obstacle of another’s self-interest. Then anger arrives to "settle" the dispute.

Meditation is essential for those who want to practice selfless service. Without it we cannot observe the selfish desires that creep into the mind. Meditation practice leaves the light on in the mind and allows us to see what comes in.

A strong intention for liberation is the galvanizing factor that allows us to rein in the senses and steady the mind and intellect. A half-hearted desire for spiritual awakening cannot muster the necessary energy and focus to overcome the tendency toward dissipation of vital force.
