In the Bhagavad Gita the body is referred to as a city with nine gates--the openings that are portals for sensory experience. In order for the city to be peaceful and beautiful there must be a city manager who knows the plan. This city manager is the purified ego who is in service of the soul.

Observe the nature of thoughts moving through the mental field. They arise like a wave moving forward with the energy of association and memory. Without involvement they will rise and fall. When the wave is spent we can rest in the conscious calm of the interim before another wave begins.
