Cutting off a particular train of thought is like cauterizing a vein; the energy must then seek another path. As dissipating thoughts are continuously “cauterized” through conscious discrimination, the energy of Self-realization grows. It is possible to have our thoughts immersed in God but only through the self-discipline of “cauterization.”

It is not only the worldly ego, the aspect of self that has no interest in spiritual matters, that is the enemy of the soul but also the “pseudo-spiritualized ego.” This is the ego that pretends to do spiritual work but on its own time frame, according to its own agenda, and without surrender.
