As a spiritual practice seek to discover the intention and motive behind your words. Let us pay attention not only to what we say but why we say it. What is it that is speaking in us? Is love speaking? Or is hatred, jealousy, or insecurity speaking?

Periods of silence are helpful towards mastering truthful speech. Short of complete silence, be slower to respond by breathing more and saying less.
