Good works are useful to a point, then they may be detrimental to one's awakening. If there is attachment to one's work--the desire to gain praise, favor with God, or an enlightened state through what we do--it becomes a detriment.

Constant activity and desiring, even for good works, is a restless state. Silence brings more peace. When peace predominates, one sees God everywhere and is of a loving frame of mind.

When the restless tendency in nature is dominant in our life, the mind is judgmental and critical, always looking for something that needs "doing" and never experiencing satisfaction. To calm this restless tendency in the midst of being active, one must see all as God's plan and let go of attachment to outcomes.
