Cutting off a particular train of thought is like cauterizing a vein--the energy must then seek another path. As dissipating thoughts are continuously "cauterized" through conscious discrimination, the energy of Self-realization grows. It is possible to have one's thoughts immersed in God, but only through the self-discipline of "cauterization."

It is not only the worldly ego--the aspect of self that has no interest in spiritual matters--that is the enemy of the soul. It is also the "pseudo-spiritualized ego"--the ego that pretends to do spiritual work but on its own time frame, according to its own idea and agenda, and without surrender.
