Relationship with the spiritual teacher allows the love of God to be realized by the student. Love is required for the purpose of the relationship to be fulfilled. First it builds a bridge of faith between teacher and student. Then the student walks across it to the direct experience of God.

The teacher is a boat that carries the student across the turbulent river of spiritual immaturity and mistaken beliefs. Attachment to the teacher is natural in the beginning. Once we reach the shore of divine realization, we relinquish that attachment so that inner wisdom may guide us.
