Quiet the restless activity of the mind to experience peace and happiness. Refuse to be tossed about by the stressful waves of worry, or the roller coaster of excitement and disappointment. Live in the world with inner freedom and unconditional happiness.

The real home, the true place where God dwells and where we find life, is the heart--the center of our being. For our physical home to be a place where we experience God's presence, it must also be so in our own hearts.

It is not the physical structure that makes a home a dwelling where the divine light shines forth but the way that people occupy it. What goes on there each day and how do people treat each other? When a home is a place of peace--of caring, love, awareness, and appreciation for life--we can feel it when we walk through the door.

Dedicate your home as a place of blessing. This purifies the heart and brings forth an awareness of the divine presence right where we are. When we have the intent of blessing we are more likely to act in accordance with our divine nature-to be generous, patient, and kind. We are signed on to override the ego's quick draw to irritability, selfishness, or pride.

The energy of prayer infuses your home environment like a sweet fragrance. The same discipline of the monastery that supports the monks in practicing the presence of God through regular times of prayer can be easily incorporated into the life of householders.

Look for the times when a moment of prayer, or mindfulness, could bring more spiritual awareness to your day--on entering and leaving your home, on beginning work, on answering the telephone, or at meal times. Decide where the natural intervals are in the flow of your day and commit to pause for a moment of prayer or contemplation at those times. It only takes a moment.

The householder who is able to live simply is one who puts God first. When spiritual realization or love for God is the primary motive for our actions this becomes easy. The joy we experience in our spiritual life and the deepening of love and peace in our relationships help us to prioritize.
