In order to live out our spiritual destiny the ego self, that which perceives itself as separate and alone, must discover and follow the Higher Self, or Spirit. In the beginning of one's spiritual journey, these two aspects of the Self seem to be at odds.

The stage is set for rampant "self will" in our lives when we desire something so strongly that we are not willing to pause and be still and ask for guidance, lest that guidance differ from the ego's plan.

In the quest for soul freedom we confront not only the outer structures and roles that have been created in our life but the inner enemies as well. People on the path of awakening must be willing to confront their own false beliefs, selfishness, greed, or lack of self discipline--anything within their own consciousness that would restrict the soul's full expression.

Our own resistance to our soul path often produces anxiety. With a mind unsettled by fear, we are cut off from the Source of our guidance and inspiration.

The presence of confusion in the mind is usually an indication of a lack of willingness to receive inner guidance. When the Higher True Self and the small self are not in harmony confusion naturally results.
