When our actions are driven by the impulses of attraction and aversion, freedom is unavailable to us. We are compelled to act based on external stimuli and the whims of the ego that wants or does not want according to its needs for self-definition and self-preservation.

In order to be free from compulsion, we must learn to be vigilant in our own consciousness. We cannot control the thoughts that enter the stream of the mind. However, we do have a choice about what we will dwell on, what we will believe, and what we will allow to remain.

Those desires that we entertain through the senses and the mind, take root in our consciousness and grow. They will "flower" over time, and be acted upon, covering over our wisdom as a weed quickly overtakes a garden that is not carefully tended by the gardener.
